A step toward healthy feet | Elio’s Diabetic Foot Program

By Christina Carfagnini, M.D. Candidate

Did you know more than 600 people with diabetes were hospitalized in the Niagara Region last year? (1) Most of these hospitalizations were likely due to infected foot ulcers (2).

Foot ulcers are an open sore on the bottom of the foot that will not heal or keep returning. Ulcers form as a result of poor circulation, foot deformities, friction or pressure, lack of sensation and minor-traumas (3). Ulcers may require foot or leg amputations if left untreated (3).

Foot ulcers can be treated by taking pressure off the affected area, removing the dead skin or tissues, application appropriate dressings, and managing blood glucose.

If you have any corns (thick or hard skin on toes), calluses (thick skin on bottom of feet), in-grown toenails, warts or slivers, have them treated by a foot-care specialist such as a podiatrist, chiropodist. Do not try to treat them yourself. In Thorold, Elio’s Foot Comfort Centre offers diabetic foot care by an in-house Chiropodist.

  • Elio’s Chiropodist can offer foot care on a regular basis to help maintain the highest possible foot health.
  • Chiropodists are medically trained to provide foot care. The training helps them prevent and treat potential complications.
  • Foot care by Elio’s chiropodist covers services such as:
  • trimming nails
  • debriding corns and callous
  • regular skin and ID checks
  • wound care and other services
