Italian Flag Raising Ceremony at City Hall

In honour of Italian Heritage Month, the City of Thorold raised the Italian flag at a ceremony in front of City Hall on June 7. Mayor Ted Luciani and city staff joined representatives from Club Capri and local residents to recognize significant contributions of Italian immigrants to Canada’s growth and prosperity.
The multicultural audience stood proudly as the Canadian and Italian national anthems filled the air. In a speech, Mayor Luciani shared a personal story on his parents’ passion for Canada and their Italian immigrant dream to work hard to make a better life for their children in Thorold.

On October 7, 2010, the Legislature of the Province of Ontario passed Bill 103 into law declaring forever the month of June as Italian Heritage month. The act, the Italian Heritage Month Act, received Royal assent on October 25, 2010.
Canadians of Italian heritage are proud of their contributions to their country and will continue their commitment to making Canada a wonderful cultural mosaic for the benefit of all its citizens.  In Thorold and many other communities across this country we celebrate the Italian cultural heritage as we promote our successes and joys in Canada.
In June groups across Canada including events in the Niagara Region feature a month long celebration of Italian Canadian culture.
