For the Friends of Beaverdams Church we turn to a proverb that tells us that a house without books is like a room without windows. We saw the group stack up many books and much more to their recent Yard Sale to help purchase new windows for the heritage building in Thorold. Bargain hunters were happy to find great deals on a wide range of books as well as plants, and other treasures at the 5th Annual Beaverdams Church Yard Sale on Saturday, June 17.

As the result of a successful fundraiser, the Friends of Beaverdams Church can add approximately $2,500 in profits on their financial book. Profits from the Yard Sale will probably allow the group to purchase one more new window in their restoration campaign. The event also welcomed visitors to tour the historic building in Thorold, and donations supported the charitable organization. Organizer Donna Cowan was very happy with the results and thanks all the volunteers from across the community and supporters that helped produce a successful Yard Sale.

As a heritage community in Niagara, Thorold offers many attractions of interest including the Battle of Beaverdams Park.
The Battle of Beaverdams Park in Thorold features historical displays, a bandstand and playground equipment. The community park is near the vicinity of a historic battle site in the War of 1812, but is not the exact location of the Battle of Beaverdams. In fact, the park commemorates both Laura Ingersoll Secord and the soldiers involved in the decisive Battle of Beaverdams in 1813.
As a historical park, this is the final resting place for soldiers who died in the Battle of Beaverdams. Located in a heritage area in downtown Thorold, this 10-acre passive park was created in 1976 on the in filled channel of the second Welland Canal. One of the locks of the second Welland canal has been partially excavated for its historical significance and is displayed in the park.

Other historic features in the park include a plaque to the founding of Thorold, as well as a stone tribute to the grave of the unknown American soldiers killed at the Battle of Beaverdams in 1813, originally erected on the original battle site in 1874. As a historic attraction in Thorold, the park also displays the Battle of Beaverdmas Cairn, a Millennium Time Capsule, and a plaque to Laura Secord. Visitors also will find the JB Stone, near the site of John Brown’s Thorold Cement Works, built adjacent to the canal circa 1840. The Battle of Beaverdams Park entrance is located on Sullivan Avenue between Front Street S. and Towpath Street. Just one block north of the park, local shoppers can visit locally owned businesses such as Henderson’s Pharmacy and Elio’s Foot Comfort Centre. A wide variety of community events are held at the Park such as the Protection Hose Company No.1 Easter Egg Hunt and Canada Day celebration, and Thorold Reed Band summer music series on Wednesday nights. This naturally beautiful park is a popular attraction in Thorold and is available to local community groups and organizations for festivals, music events, and picnics.
