Thorold Residential Rental Licensing By-law Doing It Right
Is Thorold Doing It Right with the Residential Rental Licensing By-law? Whenever we see successes in the community, it shows us that a courageous decision was once made. Take for example, the recent growth in Thorold that has stemmed from the influx of rental properties in our city. In managing Thorold’s population growth, coupled with hundreds of new houses, along with construction of apartments and renovations in the past few years, a courageous decision was made in 2018 by City Council to implement the Residential Rental Licensing By-law (RRLB). The by-law took effect on March 1, 2018. “Residential Rental Licensing is a new tool implemented within the City of Thorold. Over the years, I have personally witnessed hundreds of rental units throughout Southern Ontario where tenants live in dilapidated and desolate living conditions. Many individuals feel that they are forced to live within these poor standards due to the low inventory of affordable housing,” stated Jason Simpson, Chief Building Official The RRLB has been designed to be used in conjunction with other by-laws to support the health, safety, and well-being of persons residing in rental living accommodations and the protection of people and property in the city. Jason states, “the […]
Thorold Santa Claus Parade | November 24 | Bands | Floats
One aspect that makes the Thorold Santa Claus Parade a relatively unique experience is the illumination that adorns the downtown as our community spirit comes alive during the evening event. The theme of the parade held on November 24 was “Giving Back” and numerous floats collected items for local charities. The colourful Living Water Community Church float inspired the audience to appreciate “Jesus is the reason for the season.” Rain did not dampen the Christmas spirit that came alive with the sounds and sights of the season. We also noticed many other community groups and local companies sharing the hometown spirit in the parade including the Thorold Community Activities Group, Thorold Protection Hose Co. # 1 Volunteer Firefighters, Denis Morris High School, Rolling Meadows Bible Chapel, Memorial Militaires Band, Thorold Auto Parts and Recycling, Big Red Markets, among many other floats and sponsors. Comments from parade-goers applauded the the community event. Amy McCullough joined the conversation on our Facebook page to say: “was so happy to be able to attend the parade again this year. Great crowd despite the weather!” Debbie Motchka commented: “always love the parade we make it a family affair” Tabitha McCartney says the parade was “amazing […]
