Tomato Sauce Contest Harvest Fest Thorold

Harvest Fest Tomato Sauce Contest

Who will be Thorold’s sauce boss?

This is the hot question cooking up interest among local tomato sauce makers.
The Knights of Columbus will host a Tomato Sauce Contest at Harvest Fest to find the best sauce made in Thorold-Niagara.
Amateur sauce makers are invited to bring their cooked, homemade tomato sauce to Harvest Fest. Entrants can bring their sauce to Harvest Fest in Holy Rosary Hall anytime prior to judging by a panel of foodies. Judging starts at 12 pm, Sun. Sept. 11, 2022
Please bring your cooked sauce in a 12-ounce glass jar.

Sauces will be judged on four characteristics:

  • Texture
  • Visual appeal / red colour, bright and intense,
  • Taste / Flavour: good balance of ingredients
  • Aroma / Smell

Each sauce can score up to 10 points for each characteristic. A perfect score is 40 points. It’s your chance to win a prize and earn the honour to be crowned Thorold’s Sauce Boss.
The grand prize winner will receive a $100 Club Capri voucher. A gift card donated by John’s Meat Shop among other prizes will be up for grabs in the contest.

What ingredients go in your favourite tomato sauce?

Of course, the top sauce starts with high quality tomatoes. Then the fun and creativity begin with a variety of ingredients including onion, garlic, celery, pepper, dried oregano, bay leaf, basil, marjoram, rosemary, thyme, and maybe a bit of vino. Some sauce makers add a carrot, a pinch of sugar to create sweetness or mushrooms for a savoury taste. Some like it hot and spicy, so a chili pepper kicks the sauce up a notch, but too much heat could be trouble. For a meaty tomato sauce, pork or beef can turn the sauce into a ragu or Bolognese specialty. It’s your choice to impress the judges.
