Stay Safe, Share the Road. This is a key message in a community service campaign by the Thorold Active Transportation Advisory Committee (TATAC) . The group is also pushing the importance of walking and cycling as healthy and environmentally friendly ways to travel.
TATAC reminds us that safety is a team effort. As motorists its’ very important you treat cyclists just like any other vehicle and drive with caution around them.
Most drivers do not know that you need to treat cyclists just like other vehicles on the road, and legally you must give cyclists 1 meter of space when passing them.
TATAC works to encourage safe active transportation, as well as, making recommendations to Thorold City Council on the development of new infrastructure that allows people to safely use human-powered forms of travel for transportation, commuting and recreational purposes more often.
Carmen DeRose, City Councillor and TATAC Council Representative
Make sure to check your blind spots on right turns. It is important that everyone stays safe out on the roads.
It is the cyclist’s job to stop behind the vehicle to ensure safety and stay out of the motorist’s way.
Bikes need both a front light and a tail light for drivers to be able to see them on the road.
As well cyclists need to be wearing bright colours and reflective gear to be better seen.
Remember both motorists and cyclists are eligible for fines. Remember serious actions have consequences.
Stay Safe, Stay Back- The City of Thorold Supports the Share the Road campaign with the “Stay Back, Stay Safe” decals on each of the City of Thorold vehicles.
TATAC has participated in community events by offering bike valet services and set up information booths to promote bicycling, walking and other forms of active transportation.
